We announced today that we have received a Standing Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) from Transport Canada. This allows UAV/Drone missions to be flown in most airspace without the delay associated with filing individual, site-specific SFOCs, a process that can take up to a month. We are allowed to fly in Class G (uncontrolled) airspace and in Class C, D, E and (sometimes) F (controlled) airspace, day or night.
Achieving this milestone was a complex effort over a period of time, first filing a Simple Application, then a Complex Application and finally, the Standing, Complex Application. This allows us to respond to mission requests with little or no delay. Missions flown in controlled airspace airspace still require coordination with Air Traffic Control (ATC) but that process usually adds only a few hours.
