7 reviews for RPAS “Drone” Ground School
This course consists of a two-day in-classroom session suitable for both Basic and Advanced Pilot Certificate exams. The location is near the picturesque village of Merrickville, a short 45 minute drive from downtown Ottawa.
The course will cover the knowledge areas required to safely and legally operate an RPAS in Canadian Airspace. While Ground School is not required by Transport Canada, there is a written exam and, for those wanting the Advanced certificate, a flight review with an examiner as well.
At the conclusion of the course, the participant will receive a completion certificate suitable for insurance purposes (should your carrier require training). In the event that the planned operation requires a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC), the certificate will prove that you have received the required training.
The participant will also be given an opportunity to take the Innovation, Science and Economic Development/Industry Canada exam for the Radio Operators Certificate – Aeronautical (ROC-A). On successful completion, the participant will be given a letter of recommendation to Industry Canada to issue the certificate. The course will prepare the participant to write either the Basic or the Advanced Exam for Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) of 25 kg or less within Visual Line of Sight (VLOS).
Registration is limited to ensure personal attention.
Transport Canada Approval
This is where we would like to claim that our course is approved by Transport Canada (TC). Unfortunately, we can’t do that. Nobody can. TC does not approve RPAS ground schools. No training organization can truthfully claim that their course is TC approved. What we can, truthfully, claim is that our course syllabus is based on TP-15263E (2nd ed.), Knowledge Requirements for Pilots of Unmanned Air Vehicle Systems UAV 25 kg or less Operating Within Visual Line of Sight.

Great learning experience. There are somethings you can’t learn from YouTube and need a knowledgeable aviation expert to explain as it relates to drones. Very nice training facilities. Came away confident of knowing what’s needed for the exam and much more. Thanks Mike!
Phil Lyal –
Very good course. We covered a lot of ground in 2 days. Mike was very knowledgeable and able to handle any questions we had. Feel confident going forward to the drone licencing exam.

Wonderful experience. Mike placed the various areas of required knowledge into a cohesive context. Made it easier to comprehend the ‘Big Picture’. Spent the following week reviewing the various areas and my notes, then passed the advanced exam with flying colours. I can say with certainty that would not have been possible without the course. Thank you Mike!

I had a great time. Mike is really nice and knows his stuff. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in taking the advanced exam to sign on. So much to learn in a short period of time. The course condensed everything in a short period of time. Plus the inter-action between the other students is great!

Mike was engaged and informative. The curriculum was well displayed and easy to understand. The pace seemed to be ideal for all classmates.
I graduated from the class prepared and I passed the advanced exam first attempt.
